General Culture:
Best grown in moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Tolerates some shade, but best flowering and foliage color occur in full sun. Plant bulbs in spring. Not reliably winter hardy in the St. Louis area where bulbs should be planted in a protected location, such as on the south side of a home or garage, with application of a thick winter mulch. Bulbs may be lifted in fall and overwintered indoors in pots.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
This pineapple lily cultivar features a basal rosette of strap-shaped, linear, dark burgundy leaves which spread to 24" wide. From each rosette, a thick flower stalk rises to 20" tall in mid to late summer bearing masses of tiny, starry, purplish flowers in a dense raceme topped by a tuft of greenish bracts blushed with burgundy. Raceme flowers bloom bottom to top over a long 6-8 week bloom period. Overall flower effect is reminiscent of pineapple, hence the common name.
Problems:
No serious insect or disease problems. Winter hardiness is main concern in St. Louis.
Uses:
Protected locations in borders and around the home. Good container plant.
