General Culture:
Easily grown in fertile, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun. Roots should be kept cool, shaded and uniformly moist.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
This ground clematis can be trained to climb, but is usually left alone to crawl along the ground as the common name suggests. Produces abundant masses of small (3/4" diameter), fragrant, white fringed flowers in late spring to early summer. Flowers are followed by silvery seed heads. General appearance of flower mass is reminiscent of Clematis terniflora (A300). Foliage of this cultivar is an attractive purple.
Problems:
No serious insect or disease problems. Needs support if it is to be grown in an erect, more vine-like or shrubby form.
Uses:
Grow in the border with some support or training, or allow it to crawl along the ground in wild gardens, meadows or other areas where it will not interfere with other perennials.
