General Culture:
Easily grown in average, medium wet to wet soil in part full sun to part shade. Best in consistently moist, fertile soils which never dry out. Surprisingly good drought tolerance for a carex, however. Also will grow in shallow water (e.g., 3-4" deep). Tends to flop in too much shade. Cut foliage to the ground and remove in late winter. Naturalizes both by self seeding and rhizomes.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
This palm branch sedge cultivar is a dense, clump-forming sedge which grows 2-3 tall. Rigid, upright stems growing to 24" tall are topped by grass-like, light green leaves which radiate in fans. Foliage superficially resembles miniature palm trees, hence the common name. Insignificant flowers appear in May atop long, pointed spikes which persist into early Fall. Species is named for the Muskingum River in Ohio and is a Missouri native plant which typically occurs in swamps and river flood plains. This cultivar is synonymous with and often sold as C. m. Sentry (wachtposten in German means sentry).
No serious insect or disease problems.
Uses:
Mass or group in borders, woodland gardens or shade gardens. Also appropriate for water gardens and stream/pond margins.
