General Culture:
Easily grown in average, medium wet to wet soil in full sun. Reportedly does well in heavy clay soils, unlike many of the other ornamental grasses. Prefers moist, rich soils that do not dry out. Blooms in light shade, and actually appreciates some light afternoon shade in hot summer climates such as the St. Louis area. Needs consistent moisture when young, but develops a tolerance for some dry conditions once established. Cut clumps to the ground in late winter just before the new shoots appear.
Noteworthy Characteristics:
慉valanche?is a hybird feather reed grass cultivar that is basically a variegated form of the popular Calamagrostis x acutiflora 慘arl Foerster?(see B810). It addition to its attractive variegated foliage, it is noted for its early bloom, narrow-vertical lines and ability to grow in moist soils. It is a slowly-spreading, clump-forming, cool season ornamental grass which features an erect, slightly arching, slender clump of narrow, stiff, variegated leaves growing to 3-4?tall and 2?wide. Leaves have green margins with white in the center. Leaves produce little fall color, eventually turning tan in winter. In June, tightly-vertical flower stalks rise well above the foliage to 5?tall bearing narrow plumes of feathery, purplish-green flowers that turn golden as the seeds mature. Clumps turn tan in fall and generally provide good continuing winter interest.
No serious insect or disease problems. Watch for rust, particularly after prolonged rainy periods.
Uses:
Mass, group or specimen. Excellent vertical accent for borders and for narrow spaces in the landscape. Also effective in moist low spots or on pond/stream banks.
